%X This article explores the origins and development of German travel literature during the Middle Ages. It analyzes the religious, cultural, and intellectual motivations that shaped medieval travel writing and examines its dual function as both a spiritual and documentary genre. The study highlights the most significant German travel accounts, including those by Bernhard von Breidenbach, Wilhelm von Boldensele, and Johann Schiltberger, who combined observation with devotion. Through these works, the medieval worldview and early European encounters with foreign cultures are revealed. The article emphasizes the importance of medieval travel narratives asprecursors of modern ethnographic and literary travel writing.
